How to improve the efficiency of online learning

更新日期:2020年8月17日

In the world today, learning can take place in a traditional classroom setting, as well as online. A traditional classroom setting is where learning takes place and the teacher provides face to face instructional learning to students. Students are also able to communicate face to face with the teacher as well as other students in the classroom. On the other hand, online learning is where courses are taking online, but the teacher and students interact or communicate online. Currently, due to the pandemic, most of the teachers and students are engaging in some sort of distance learning and planning to do so in the near future. However, unsupervised and impractical, online learning appears to be inefficient, so for students whose time is so precious, how can they improve the efficiency of online learning? Well, students need to develop and utilize strategies that help them during this online studying environment.

Choose a quiet and undisturbed environment and avoid any distractions when studying, creating an isolated environment is undoubtedly the first choice to concentrate and improve learning efficiency. It is easier said than done, but there are practical ways to help one get rid of distractions long as the individual has the determinations. While studying, switch off notifications from social media apps on electronic devices so that students won’t be distracted by a message. If the phone is not essential for academic purposes than stash it away. On laptops, one could temporarily block websites and the time it takes for the individual attempting to unblock it should be enough to make the individual think twice about ruining the learning schedule. In addition, students should consider the situation seriously in order to quickly enter the learning state. For instance, getting out of bed and sit on the desk, tidying up the desk, dressing neatly and formally are conducive to creating a good learning environment and improving learning attentions.

Without a professor regularly checking in, it’s important to leverage one’s time management skills. Individuals should allocate their time and stick to the plan, and make sure the goal is achievable when creating the planner. In addition, the loose time of online study makes students more likely to procrastinate about their assignments, so it is important to glance over the syllabus before the first day of class, make note of major assignments, and mark them on a calendar in order to know what workload is coming in the weeks ahead. Also, don’t forget to factor in prior commitments that may interfere with the regular study schedule so one can have enough extra time to complete assignments. Commit to making online coursework part of a weekly routine. Break up the workload into chunks, then, set reminders to complete the tasks. Treat these blocks of time seriously and set a timer and give permission to move on to other tasks once the time is up. Furthermore, studying online for a long time will lead to fatigue and boringness, therefore students must consider breaks into their daily planner, giving their eyes an opportunity to rest. Additionally, physical activities should also be included in these brief breaks since online studying results in a long time period of sitting. Setting up short breaks in between will keep the brain fresh and help prevent students to feel overwhelmed. Moreover, one could create a reward system in the schedule in order to motivate one to exert more effort. This method not promotes study efficiency but also makes the process more fun.

Preview in advance is the key to ensure a good effect on online learning, even though it is online learning, it does not mean that preview is not important. Whether it is the teacher's PPT or the electronic textbooks, they are all the best materials for preview. Going to the lecture with questions can not only make one enter the learning state more quickly, keep up with the teacher's teaching progress, but also achieve the effect of outline and accelerate the absorption of knowledge. In addition, reviewing after class to check for mistakes and misunderstanding is also essential. The most direct way is to watch the video playback to make up for what is missing or not understood in class. For courses without playback, reference textbooks, PPT, notes, homework exercises, or through e-mail and other means of direct feedback, communication with teachers, can effectively solve the problem.

Most of the teachers' lectures have outlines, which reflect the key points a

nd difficulties of the teaching content, and are organized, so they are more important, and therefore, they should be recorded in the notebook.

Write down the questions you don't understand in time so that you can consult your classmates or teachers in time to figure out the questions.

If you have anything that you are confused about what the teacher said, you should write it down in time. Such doubts may be caused by your own misunderstanding. It may also be caused by the teacher's carelessness in the lecture. After writing it down, it is easy to discuss it with the teacher.

Diligently memorizing the problem-solving skills, ideas, and methods mentioned by the teacher are of great benefit to developing thinking strategies, broadening one’s perspective, cultivating ability, and improving the level of problem-solving.

It is very useful to remember the teacher's summary of the classroom content, to find out the key points and the relationship between the various parts, to master the basic concepts, formulas, and theorems, to find the existing problems, to find the rules, and to integrate the classroom content.

If you want to learn more efficiently, it is not enough to just take notes from the key points of the class. Especially when there are a lot of confusing concepts, or when many different knowledge points are related to each other, the notes will appear a little messy. To sort out the knowledge structure and make a mind map is not only the review of the learned knowledge but also the deepening and improvement of the learned knowledge. In the beginning, you may find it troublesome to do a mind map, but when you put the points all in the mind map, bold the key places, and take it out directly when reviewing, you will feel that the structure is clear and the focus is prominent.

Making good use of various learning tools such as computers, mobile phones, teaching materials, and notebooks can improve the learning effect better. Students can choose the computer screen as the "main listening tool", and by choosing the mobile devices as the "interactive tool" in class, students can interact with teachers and other students and view the files shared in the group while ensuring that the computer side will not be affected. While listening to the lecture, you can open the textbook and notebook at the same time for key recording, or use special software for split-screen recording. For example, you can use both software on the screen at the same time, using one to read the textbook on the left and the other to take notes on the right. In this way, the pictures and tables that are difficult to draw in the textbook or PPT can be cut directly into the notes or marked directly in the textbook or PPT, which is more convenient to record.

Some courses like foreign languages might need that specific language environment in order to master it, but without the face-to-face conversations between teachers and students, the courses are difficult to comprehend. However, there are many educational organizations setting online tools that help educate students, and students can participate in online learning environments. These online resources, no matter they are in video-form, or text-form, students can take advantage of online degree programs, and, therefore, helping themselves to create a language environment at home as well. Online courses present challenges if one is not prepared, but, if the student develops skills for effective online learning, they will find the courses as excellent alternatives to a traditional classroom setting.

Students should always set aside some time to give themselves a rest, relax, empty oneself from stress and anxiety, and continue to carry more things. Here are some simple and practical methods to help the individual relax and reset themselves:

Try taking a hot bath when you are tired, listen to some soothing music, or sing a song, which will definitely make you feel relaxed, and then get some sleep and wake up full of energy. Note here that sleeping should not transform into drowsiness, and drowsiness divided into psychological and physical, psychological drowsiness will gradually develop into physical drowsiness. Drowsiness will make you feel more sleepy and this would only make your rest inefficient or even negative.

This is not just a Buddhist meditation posture, and we can also use it to relax, you just need to sit cross-legged, keep your backs straight, let your brains empty, and imagine yourself in a quiet and peaceful environment, surrounded by flowers and birds.

When people exercise, the body will secrete dopamine, which can make people happy, while speeding up their metabolism, and therefore the bad emotions will be excreted along with body waste.
